Our History

Founded in 1971 as the Institute of Human Behavior, Reserach and Education by behavioral psychologist Dr. Laura Phillips, and located in Alameda since 1984, CLC was created to provide an alternative placement for children whose educational needs were not met in public schools. After becoming a state-certified, non-public school, CLC began working collaboratively with the public school districts to serve their more complex students. Though continuously expanding services, CLC has remained small, ensuring quality programs and a nurturing environment.

Our Services

  • Individualized academic, vocational, social and emotional programming
  • Individual, group and family counseling
  • Speech, language and occupational therapy as determined by IEP
  • Structured cooperative play and social skill development groups
  • Emphasis on effective transitioning of students back to public school programs or to independent living situations
  • Nearly 40 years experience in successful programs for the emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, autistic, Asperger's syndrome and developmentally delayed population

Equal treatment and access to services are offered without regard to race, religion, gender, gender preference, or national origin.

Referral and Placement

Placement inquiries are often initiated by public schools, pediatricians, mental health professionals, community agencies, or by parents directly. Final placement is based on the mutual agreement of the referring school district, parents and CLC. CLC welcomes school visits by interested parents of special needs children. To arrange a visit, please call (510) 769-2322 for the Elementary School Program, or (510) 769-7100 for the Middle/ High School Program.
